Kelbris, also known as The Father, was the leader and founder of the Moon Children, who regarded him as a prophet due to his claims of being whispered to by Luna, their deity. His interpretation of the end of the world and subsequent mysterious death made him a legendary figure within the cult. During the Moon Children Arc, the possibility that he had ascended was discovered; this would later be confirmed in the Awakening Arc.

Through video titles and image filenames throughout the first two phases of the Awakening Arc, it was heavily implied that Kelbris and The Father were the same entity. This was later explicitly confirmed by the Eternity Project website.

History

1998

Kelbris founded the Moon Children as a front for the Eternity Project. According to an explanatory passage on youshouldnthavedonethat.net's Theories page, Kelbris was the first "Moonchild" to receive whispers from the cult's deity, Luna. Kelbris related to the cult that the whispers detailed Luna's future consumption of the Earth. Her messages were distorted and sometimes contained the number 3 said between words. Some time afterward, Kelbris was found electrocuted, and whether intending to or not, had successfully ascended. Sometime afterward, he was deified as The Father, and the cult's later iterations were built on the foundations of Kelbris' prophecies.

According to the prophecy as recorded on the original Moon Children website, it was never determined if Kelbris had ascended upon his death, however the following sentence described Kelbris' death as his "transcension" without any further explanation. The full account of the prophecy from the Eternity Project website states that the confusion was instead if his death was an intentional attempt at ascension. He became "the first to undergo Ascension," though it speculates that the process drove him mad as well - mentioning that the process was "unrefined," and his vessel at the time was "archaic." It is also stated that it took "several years of failed attempts" before another Moonchild - presumably Ben - would successfully ascend and join him.

At some point, The Father was integrated into World άλφα as an overseer. The Eternity Project stated that they had somehow lost contact with Kelbris sometime afterward, noting that, "His whereabouts are currently unknown." Yet, despite this, Abel clearly demonstrates he is well aware of The Father's presence in the cartridge in Methods of Revolution [Ben.wmv] and Live Transmission #3.

Haunted Cartridge Arc

Several brief mentions of The Father are made by Rosa in Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines - Rosa:

  • "Why is he smiling? The father? Is it- Is it the father behind him?"
  • "He's furious... the man with the crest... the voice in the darkness, boss."
  • "Some [enemies] with swords, some with smiles."

The first of these mentions would be recalled in a later video.

Kelbris' presence throughout Jadusable's videos is vague, but he is at least represented by the Happy Mask Salesman - a connection that was later confirmed by BEN when uploading TheTruth.rtf to /x/. In day four.wmv's summary, Jadusable mentions hearing his laugh faintly while exploring the broken Clock Town, and in the video itself, he is briefly shown during the Swordsman's School sequence. At 4:23, the line, "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" appears, accompanied by the HMS's laugh.

The Happy Mask Salesman is more prominently featured in BEN.wmv. When Jadusable is first teleported to Clock Town, his laugh plays at the end of Tatl's dialogue, and the camera is positioned within the model of the Clock Tower, where he is located. Upon entering the tower, the beginning of his regular introductory cutscene is played before Jadusable is taken to Termina Field, where a reversed and slowed down version of the HMS's theme plays in the background. In the field, Jadusable finds the Happy Mask Salesman, accompanied by the Skull Kid, Elegy Statue, and Epona. He notes that the HMS is the most frightening presence in the scene - while his idle animation does not play, his head follows Link as he moves. Jadusable gets out his ocarina and is presented with a song prompt - upon playing Song of Healing, the music speeds up as Link bursts into flames. Afterward, the HMS's laugh plays, again accompanied by, "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"

At first, the Happy Mask Salesman is not present in DROWNED.wmv. However, when Link encounters the Skull Kid, the HMS's face flashes by once more. After playing the Elegy of Emptiness in response to a song prompt, Jadusable is teleported from area to area in Ocarina of Time, with all the dialogue replaced with, "You shouldn't have done that..." He ends up in the Happy Mask Shop briefly (though the HMS himself is absent), before being teleported to the Moon. As he is approached by and tries to look at the Elegy Statue, the HMS flashes on-screen again, with an angry expression and outstretched hand, accompanied by the sound of Kotake's scream. The following dialogue appears, with the final line accompanied by the HMS's laugh:

  • "You will be given one last chance..."
  • "Back to where it all began..."
  • "Come play with us."

The Happy Mask Salesman is not physically present near the beginning of jadusable.wmv - however, when Jadusable checks his Pictograph Box, he finds a picture of the HMS and the Elegy Statue side-by-side, which he promptly deletes. After he is killed during the fight with Gomess, the phrase, "Why is he smiling? The father?" appears, referencing Rosa's words in Jadusable's first video. Link next appears in Ikana Graveyard at night, and as he walks around, Bongo Bongo's murmur - a sound later associated with Kelbris during the Moon Children Arc - can be heard in the background. After checking the inscription on the last grave, Link falls forward and through the ground before the screen fades to black - and the phrase, "It'll be our little secret, okay?" appears, accompanied by the HMS's laugh once more. Finally, after Jadusable makes his way into the Clock Tower, the screen cuts to black with the text, "You can't run." This is followed by an extended shot of Link, the Elegy statue, and the Happy Mask Salesman standing together, cutting out shortly before the next Elegy statue spawns in front of Link.

The Happy Mask Salesman also makes a brief appearance in TheTruth.rtf, appearing in Jadusable's nightmare, saying that he has a new mask for Jadusable to wear. As the Moon Children from Majora's Mask attach the mask to Jadusable's face and sew his limbs together ("crafting him into another Elegy Statue," in his own words), the HMS leans down toward him and says, "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" with a grin on his face.

Moon Children Arc

The Father is mentioned in the Moon Children's creed: "O father, I pledge to youa [sic]." Later, File 6 of the downloadable files was revealed to be an image of the Happy Mask Salesman, titled, "the father.jpg" - the same image that BEN uploaded alongside TheTruth.rtf to /x/ at the end of the first arc.

Kelbris' presence on youshouldnthavedonethat.net was first discovered on the contact page for DROWNED, containing Kelbris.jpg and the text, "Dead End. Go back," as well as a cipher in the title that translated to, "MY EYES... THEY TOOK... MY EYES..." The Search page also contained a possible message from Kelbris, "Do you honestly think you can escape me?" Kelbris himself did not seem to make a direct appearance at this point; however, he was implicated as The Father in Ifrit's disappearance during the last hour of the first cycle, via the music file playing on the main page: Matt's Final Hour.mp3, a reversed and sped-up version of the HMS's theme.

During the Second Cycle, the Song of Healing was played, causing a message from Kelbris to appear on the main page. The username read, "WHO DO YOU THINK THIS IS," and the post read, "I AM KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR NEXT. LET ME IN. I WANT TO SPEAK." The post was made at 6:66pm (realistically, 7:06pm). Rosa's disappearance soon afterward is attributed to Kelbris, due to the mention of "knocking at your door" - something that both Rosa and Ifrit reported hearing shortly before losing contact with players.

When the playerbase discovered Within Hubris, a Tenor account belonging to Kelbris was discovered to exist. When the password to Wayward Horizon was discovered, a topic by Kelbris was found, simply titled "..." It consisted of a single post, just saying "GET OUT." Shortly afterward, the password to Wayward Horizon changed to "youshouldntbehere".

Awakening Arc

When Link enters the Clock Tower in end.wmv, the Happy Mask Salesman asks him if he has recovered Majora's Mask yet, and becomes angry when he has not. Other than being warned that "Only ' hours remain," the scene follows the regular game's script before Link heads downstairs. In gateway.wmv, sonata.wmv, and CHILDREN.wmv, the HMS appears in Termina Field alongside the Elegy Statue, Skull Kid, and Epona, much like in BEN.wmv. After playing the Sun's Song in CHILDREN.wmv, Link notices Epona and Skull Kid in the distance, and as he approaches them, the HMS fades into view as well. Later on, Link finds himself in a black void, flanked by the Goron Elder and the Elder's son, and Bongo Bongo's murmur can be heard faintly in the background. Shortly after, the game resets, and Link finds himself in a broken version of South Clock Town, deserted save for a single NPC - the Potion Seller from Ocarina of Time. As he focuses on the man, the HMS's laugh plays once more. Subsequently, a screenshot of this moment was posted to the Methods of Revolution website as a file named "why-is-he-smiling.png". However, the Potion Seller would later be identified as Matt (Ifrit) on Patreon. (The reason for this is possibly revealed in The End.wmv where Matt is shown smiling with the HMS, The Father, behind him.)

THE FATHER.wmv, the final video recorded by Jadusable before his own death, was originally titled KELBRIS.wmv, which changed several times before settling on its final name; this, along with images found the same night on methodsofrevolution.com strongly implied that Kelbris and The Father were the same entity. The video itself confirms that Kelbris was contained within the cartridge, alongside BEN and its other inhabitants. In the video, Jadusable pushes further into the game, despite repeated warnings to stop exploring. At first, the game warns him, "You're going to wake him up," but when he continues to play, he is told, "YOU ARE DIGGING TOO DEEP. TURN BACK NOW." Jadusable continues to ignore these warnings, even deleting save files titled "STOP" and "PLEASE". After the final reset, Kelbris is presumably awakened. Now in control, he tells Jadusable, "I FOUND YOU." As Jadusable walks through the void, Kelbris' face appears, eventually devouring him when he tries to attack, presumably symbolizing Jadusable's imminent death and ascension.

Despite BEN's apparent escape to the internet via TheTruth.rtf, it appears Kelbris remained in the cartridge. Almost a full decade later, in Methods of Revolution [Ben.wmv], he is seen looming over the game area, watching the latest player - Sarah. The HMS is also seen lying on the forest floor, possibly signifying that Kelbris has abandoned his former vessel. As Sarah notices Kelbris' face looking down at her, she runs toward the edge of the forest and falls through the ground, whereupon she encounters Ben, who says, "It's OK... you're safe from him here."

In The Truth.wmv, Ben (and possibly some of the cartridge's other occupants) explains to her that Kelbris has spent the decade tormenting and controlling the actions of Ben and anyone else who attempted to intervene, having turned Jadusable into "another vessel". Kelbris' power within the cartridge is also somewhat elaborated upon - per Ben's explanation, he has "consumed and corrupted" all the other imprisoned souls; despite the fact the spirits were able to escape him by hiding within the game's code, his power continued to grow, almost completely destroying the game's world and leaving only glitchy remnants behind. Ben explains that now that Kelbris knows where they are, their hiding place is not going to be safe for much longer, suggesting that Sarah's arrival has led him to their last safe haven. The spirits ask her to "go back to where it all began and stop him," and to "heal their souls." After gaining the power of the Adult Link mask, Sarah plays the Song of Time, resetting the game to its original state in 2010, before Jadusable played it himself.

In Methods of Revolution [The Truth.wmv], an excited Abel mentions that, given enough time, Kelbris would eventually corrupt the game world once more, and also makes reference to the Majora's Mask simulation having a "program and directive to corrupt as much as it could," possibly referring to Kelbris' destructive madness. Despite Abel's instructions, Sarah continues to play the game.

In The Last Hero.wmv, she meets Matt within the Clock Tower basement, where he asks her if she was able to find anything that could "disrupt a simulation" in her world (the hotel). When Sarah shrugs and shakes her head in response, he expresses disappointment, observing that they'll have to face Kelbris within "his own plane of existence." He warns her that Kelbris is likely aware of her existence, that he can "manipulate the very fabric of this world," and that he "seems to be making his move." As Sarah leaves the Clock Tower, a pair of Odolwas appear to attack her, presumably summoned by Kelbris.

In The Moon Children.wmv, Sarah enters the Stock Pot Inn, finding it filled with a thick, dark purple fog. As she explores, Bongo Bongo's murmur can be heard in the background once again. Within, she finds one of the Moon Children wearing Odalwa's mask. The child says that he doesn't want to play with her, then observes, "But that's not up to either of us, is it?" The child disappears, and Sarah finds him upstairs - whereupon the game resets. When she loads her save file up again, she is reset to the Clock Tower exit - and finds that all of Clock Town's inhabitants have been replaced with ReDeads, a result of Kelbris' power growing stronger.

In The Happy Mask Salesman.wmv, Sarah finds Clock Town all but deserted, with ominous marks on the ground where characters once stood. Even Matt and Ben have disappeared from the Clock Tower basement - the only character left is Anju, who can be seen making her way to the Laundry Pool as in the original game. When Sarah follows her, however, she finds the Laundry Pool similarly empty. After checking the Curiosity Shop's back door, she turns around and sees the Happy Mask Salesman's body, lying at the bottom of the pool, whereupon the reversed Song of Healing starts to play. (It is later revealed Jadusable had killed the HMS in order to prevent Sarah from potentially advancing the in-game plot) As she returns to South Clock Town, Bongo Bongo's murmur can be heard in the background once again. In West Clock Town, Circle warns her that her presence, as well as the HMS's apparent death, appears to be eroding the game's stability even faster. As they try to leave, they are attacked by a Wart, which Sarah manages to defeat with Rosa's help before continuing on to Snowhead. Further evidence of Kelbris' corrupting influence can be seen in The Dying World.wmv, where trees, snowballs, and other debris can be seen floating around in the air haphazardly.

In The Showdown.wmv, Sarah encounters a corrupted Jadusable in the form of Zora Link in "the space between the code." Having either been possessed or somehow influenced by Kelbris, as Jadusable prepares to fight her, he says, "FATHER - It's time for us to leave this world." Bongo Bongo's murmur plays once more, followed by a deep rumbling before Jadusable and Sarah are warped to the Sages' Chamber from Ocarina of Time.

The Eternity Project website, discovered shortly after the premiere of The Showdown.wmv, reveals that Kelbris founded the Moon Children as a front for the project, as a way to draw in depressed, alienated children for their experiments with Ascension. A hidden page on the website showed a grotesque, blue-skinned man with an unnaturally large smile overlaid with the phrase "THEY LIED TO ME" repeated several times. Two different music tracks, one of which was the Ikana Canyon theme, played simultaneously upon viewing the page, resulting in a disturbing ambience. Upon viewing the metadata for the tracks in the page's coding, it was discovered that the phrase "JUST LET ME DIE" was hidden on the page, and that the internal data of the Ikana Canyon theme .mp3 file listed its album as "THEY LIED THEY LIED THEY LIED THEY LIED" and included an internal comment which read "MY EYES... THEY TOOK... MY EYES..." This lead to the assumption that the image portrayed Kelbris.

In The End.wmv, Sarah performs the Fourth Day Glitch and apparently grants The Father freedom once again. However, The Father doesn't appear until much later in a void alongside Matt, who by then had revealed his intention of using The Father to remake the world into a "nightmare". After Sarah defeats the final Moon Child by playing the Song of Healing, Matt is suddenly "deleted" and The Father appears in his place, demanding to know the reason for Sarah's presence. In response, Sarah shows The Father the Pendant of Memories, prompting The Father to remark that she is "not like the ones before". Circle explains that the inhabitants of World άλφα are scared and angry and that they only want to live. The Father acquiesces, and explains that he will be deleting all 'anomalies' from World άλφα in order to ensure the inhabitants' safety. He then says that he will also need to 'reset' the people's memories in order to correct their mental traumas, before commenting that Ben will be given a functional body, explaining that his imprisonment in the Elegy statue was an "oversight". As a user on the edge of World άλφα's reality, The Father finally explains to Sarah and Circle that they will also be erased with the other "anomalies", but assures them that World άλφα and its inhabitants will continue on. The Father then fades away as Sarah and Circle are removed from World άλφα.

Personality

Not much is known about Kelbris' personality, but he is shown to be quite aggressive and domineering, via threatening, ominous messages directed at the players and other characters. He is also implied to be very sadistic and possibly murderous, between Jadusable's ascension, Matt and Rosa's disappearances, and the continuous torment of the souls trapped within the cartridge. The Eternity Project website in particular describes him as possessing a "propensity for wanton violence and uncontrolled aggression" - though whether this was always the case or not is uncertain, as speculation on the website suggests that his violent behaviour may be due to either the "rudimentary" method of his Ascension, or simply him slowly going insane over time, due to factors such as the "archaic" nature of his vessel, the "unrefined" Ascension process, and/or being isolated and alone for "several years".

Despite these findings, Kelbris/The Father's appearance in The End.wmv paints a very different picture. The Father is shown to be quite mechanical and unfeeling, and it becomes evident that he lacks any form of true autonomy - far closer to an AI than any of the humans digitized after him. Abel once explained that the The Father has a "program and directive to corrupt as much as it could", however, given all that is known about Abel and the Eternity Project itself, the accuracy of this statement is a matter of debate. The Father calls himself the "last remaining god" of World άλφα and explains he is "reflexive in design" — that is, he oversees άλφα and its inhabitants by reacting to their stimuli. As he puts it, the 'others' either attacked him, or wanted him to destroy, and so he assumed a villainous role. The Father is also shown to possess a protective and caring disposition, although this is perhaps due solely to his "parameters" and not any conscious decision on his part. He removes Matt for the sake of the world's safety and resets its inhabitants to pacify what he calls their "severe mental trauma". The evident incongruities of these revelations with knowledge of Kelbris/The Father's dealings beforehand are unresolved.

Notes

  • His avatar on youshouldnthavedonethat.net comes from Elephant Man, a digital painting by Michael Kutsche and based on David Lynch's film The Elephant Man.
  • During The Glitch on YSHDT.net, three identical images of a gas mask (imagery normally associated with DROWNED) - Files 44, 46, and 47 - were discovered, with the filenames "Eyes.jpg" and "StoleMy.jpg," respectively. This, along with Kelbris' image on DROWNED's contact page, may be evidence of a link between the two.
    • The gas mask pictured in the files was created by mask enthusiast Tom Banwell, and is named "Oilfant". If not simply a coincidence, this and "Elephant Man" may suggest some sort of association of elephants with representations of Kelbris in Arc 2.
  • In The Prisoner.wmv, one of the four remaining Moon Children says, "For now, we will act in His stead until He is ready." Due to the reverential capitalization, it's likely that the Moon Child is talking about Kelbris.
  • In The Predecessor.wmv and The Final Hours.wmv, the Moon can be seen to turn around to keep its gaze on Sarah. This may be symbolic of Kelbris keeping a close eye on her actions.
  • Kelbris appears to 'speak' almost exclusively in ALL-CAPS; oftentimes distinguishing his identity as the speaker.
