First appearance

Last appearance

"He didn't have many friends. All he wanted was to be his favorite hero from his favorite videogame. They knew full well what they were doing to him - he was their first test."

Ben was a member of the Moon Children, previously thought to be the owner of the haunted Majora's Mask cartridge prior to the old man. His ascension resulted in the creation of BEN as his namesake, an evil entity that would terrorize Jadusable before seemingly escaping into the Internet and turning dormant for ten years.

History

Prior to April 23, 2002

Ben was a member of the Moon Children alongside his friend, Matt. Not knowing that the cult was more than it appeared to be, he was convinced that he could become his favorite video game character, Link, if he ascended.

April 23, 2002

On the day of Ben's ascension, he was drowned. His consciousness was transferred to a Majora's Mask cartridge that would later be used to contain other ascended members; however, he was given the form of the Elegy of Emptiness statue rather than Link himself, completely removing his ability to interact with the world around him.

Sometime afterward, other Moon Children ascended and formed the Behavioral Event Network, abbreviated as BEN. At an unknown time, the cartridge was left in the care of an old man.

Haunted Cartridge Arc

In the summary for day four.wmv, Jadusable receives the haunted cartridge from the old man, who said it used to belong to a kid around Jadusable's age who is no longer around, then tells him "goodbye Ben" as he's leaving. After realizing what the old man said, he understands that the cartridge used to belong to Ben, who may have been the grandson of the old man.

In the summary for BEN.wmv, Jadusable recounts an encounter with the old man's neighbor, in which he describes in sparse detail that eight years prior, on April 23, a kid from the neighborhood had an accident. Later that day, during the recording of BEN.wmv, his cause of death was revealed by the two save files at the end of the video, which read, "BEN DROWNED."

Throughout Jadusable's time playing the game, Ben would appear frequently in the form of the Elegy of Emptiness statue.

Awakening Arc

Almost a decade later, in Methods of Revolution [Ben.wmv], Abel presents the cartridge to Sarah during her stay in the hotel. The game places her in a cutscene environment that isn't usually able to be accessed, where she sees The Father staring at her from where the moon used to be, prompting her to run until she falls out of the game area. With her in a safe place, Ben reveals himself and asks her to play a song to him.

Soon after, a page for Ben appeared on the Methods of Revolution website. It contained the following:

"can you hear me? i dont think he wants us to talk to each other…. I”m sorry if I got you in trouble.

"there were others here that came before too, but i learned my lesson with them. i dont want you to leave me too, so lets play together, ok?"

The page included a download link to the background music that played when Ben began talking to Sarah. Several days later, below the download link, text was inserted saying: "i know lots of fun games like hide n seek".

In The Truth.wmv, Sarah played the Song of Healing for Ben. After spending a few minutes wary of approaching the statues in the distance, she was given a mask that transformed Link into his adult form from Ocarina of Time. In The Last Hero.wmv, Ifrit appears to her in the Clock Tower and explains that the Elegy statues have always been Ben, trapped inside but unable to do anything else, suffering a fate worse than death, and that Jadusable's Fourth Day glitch allowed him the ability to appear at will.

Ben wasn't seen in person again until after Sarah performed the Fourth Day glitch in The End.wmv. After the glitch was performed, he and Jadusable were found hiding under the Clock Tower. The statue was now colored yellow, with its face expressing fear. Sarah and Jadusable left him there when preparing to face Matt together.

As a result of Sarah's actions, The Father restored Ben to his rightful body, as seen in the final shot of The End.wmv.

Personality

Very little is known about Ben's personality, but he idolized Link from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and wished to be like him. His page on methodsofrevolution.com also shows that he enjoyed playing games with others, such as hide and seek.
