Transcript
Introduction
A slowed down and pitch-shifted version of “Grisly Reminder” by Midnight Syndicate plays as the video starts. Five different video frames are arranged on-screen. The top three frames show various clips of Jadusable’s playthrough during the Haunted Cartridge Arc. The bottom two frames show Sarah’s playthrough, the Moon Children’s conversation, and her fight with Jadusable during The Showdown.wmv. Static fills the screen and the clips disappear. A clip of Sarah running towards the Astral Observatory from The Final Hours.wmv is shown, with a BEN Artbreeder face from iseeyou faintly visible in the center of the screen. As she reaches and talks to the Astronomer, static fills the screen again and the music stops.
The gameplay starts with Sarah looking into the telescope, having already performed the Fourth Day Glitch. She looks around slowly, zooming into Clock Tower, and looks up at the sky to see the Moon far away in the distance. She exits the telescope to see that the Astronomer has disappeared, and the screen cuts to black.
‘Dawn of a New Day’
The gameplay starts up again with Sarah in the Observatory. She walks around slowly before heading down the stairs towards the sewers, stopping briefly to see that the Scarecrow has disappeared. Jumping down the stairs, she looks back to see the row of gravestones still there. She makes her way back to East Clock Town and enters the Mayor’s Residence, and a gravestone stands in the main hallway which reads ‘A vessel that holds wandering spirits rests here.’ She walks to the back of the Residence where the Mayor’s Office would be, only to see the room has been deleted and she is unable to walk through. She tries the hallway on the right and is also unable to walk through. Sarah then leaves the Residence and heads down the stairs towards the Treasure Shop, where she encounters Matt standing in front of the Happy Mask Salesman’s body.
Encountering Matt
“Well… looks like it’s the end of the line, huh?” Matt laughs as Sarah looks around. A boulder is blocking the exit to Termina Field. “…What’s wrong? What were you expecting?” The camera focuses on the Happy Mask Salesman’s body. “It’s incredibly quiet now. I’m sure you’re desperate to know what happened to all of the others.” Matt’s eyes become glitched as he reveals the truth. “They’ve all died.” Sarah takes out her sword and Matt’s eyes return to normal. “I understand your anger, but isn’t it misplaced? I didn’t kill them. You chose to do the glitch, you knew the risk, didn’t you? Is it your fault? Or maybe it’s because of that mask you wore.” The Adult Mask briefly flashes up on Sarah’s face. “I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done.”
Sarah gasps as the Happy Mask Salesman is suddenly shown on fire and tied to a stake next to Matt. “The Father will be here soon. We will remake this world forever.” The reversed Ikana Canyon theme plays, with additional chanting from Ocarina of Time’s Fire Temple. Seven Banker characters kneel in front of the Happy Mask Salesman and pray to it, while Sarah holds her head in pain and Matt continues to stare at her. Time speeds up, and it becomes night-time. Sarah runs away into South Clock Town, where she sees the buildings are on fire. A small Moon is seen near the exit to Termina Field as five Banker characters pray to it. Sarah talks to the Banker nearest her, and he says “He will complete us. Complete us. There’s no turning back the clock now. All will join until there is nothing! Nothing!!! We all must leave this world.” He stops hitting his knees and stares up at Sarah, telling her to “Join us.” Sarah is then presented with a “…” text box and a No or Yes option. She chooses “No”. The item error sound is heard, and the Banker responds, “You shouldn’t have done that.”
Sarah looks around briefly for a moment, then runs into Clock Tower. Sarah enters the tower and looks up to see that the central pillar is missing, and the clock is silent. She then runs down the stairs towards the sewers, where a cutscene begins.
Finding Jadusable
Sarah turns to the left and is shocked to see a yellow Elegy statue and Jadusable (now as a blue Fierce Deity Link) sitting by the water. Laches’ remix of “Lost in My Thoughts” starts playing as Jadusable speaks. “Well, congratulations. You freed Ben. Against all odds and my best efforts you succeeded.” Circle’s ring is heard as he says “That’s right! Now step away from him!” Jadusable replies “…. You still don’t get it, do you?” Sarah stares at him as he gets to his feet. “He’s come down here to hide with me.”
The camera shows Jadusable’s full form, and the Elegy statue’s face is shown with a grimace and whited-out eyes. Jadusable turns to Sarah. “He’s terrified. We all are. How are you going to turn him – or anyone else – back to normal?” He asks her. “Did you think that somehow, some kind of magical happy ending existed? You’ve kept trying to turn this story into something it isn’t and now all of us have paid the price. I told you before, there are no heroes here.”
The screen fades to black, and flashbacks of Sarah’s adventures in the cartridge are shown in black-and-white. They are:
- Sarah clipping past the Skulltula in The Moon Children.wmv;
- Sarah receiving the Light Arrows from Rosa in The Prisoner.wmv;
- Sarah fighting Gomess in The Prisoner.wmv;
- Darmani talking to Sarah in The Dying World.wmv;
- Sarah finding the Hookshot in The Dying World.wmv;
- Sarah using the Hookshot to reach Great Bay in The Predecessor.wmv;
- Sarah being killed by Jadusable in The Showdown.wmv;
- Sarah being revived and returning to Clock Town in The Final Hours.wmv.
Throughout this flashback, Jadusable says:
“Did it ever seem strange to you that you were thrust into this cliched hero’s journey? That if you ever were met with an impasse, that somehow there would be a fluke to allow you progress? That at times it would border on an anime cliché – how you’d show up just in time to save your ‘friends’.”
The camera returns to Jadusable as he continues. “You aren’t the first, but you might be the densest. Many have tried to do what you’ve done. I’ve killed them all.” Sarah takes out her sword as Circle says “Well then try it! You couldn’t keep us down before and you won’t now!” Jadusable sighs and shakes his head. “I’m not interested in fighting you, you’ve already done the damage I was trying to prevent. Besides, even if I could I have no means. My blade was destroyed when I tried to stop the final child.” Sarah puts her sword away. “You tried to stop him?” Circle asks. Jadusable nods. “Whether we were tricked or came here voluntarily, this world is our twisted home. We have to protect it. Those children just want to twist it into their demented plaything for what they call The Father. But the truth is, not even they know what it truly wants.”
The screen fades to black. A text box from Jadusable pops up: “Every three days, the world resets. Some keep their memories. Some don’t. It’s the natural order of things. For years I have kept this world, as imperfect as it is, safe. I grew to actually care about its inhabitants. Others stuck here, just like me... When duplicates of items started appearing I knew something was horribly wrong. We all did. I knew I had to act quickly.”
The screen fades to black and “Hype Strings Beat” by Farhan Khan begins playing as Jadusable’s behind-the-scenes actions throughout Sarah’s playthrough are shown. These are:
- Jadusable meeting the Happy Mask Salesman in the Clock Town Tower, killing him, stealing the Deku Mask, and standing over his dead body;
- Jadusable using the Hookshot to sneak past a Redead and leave Clock Town;
- Jadusable playing Epona’s Song to summon Epona;
- Jadusable riding Epona over a wall in Ikana Canyon;
- Jadusable wearing the Stone Mask in Clock Town;
- Jadusable breaking an ice wall in Snowhead;
- Jadusable riding through the Snowhead section of Termina Field;
- Jadusable entering the Goron Shrine in Snowhead to meet Darmani;
- Jadusable using Epona to leap past the gate into Great Bay;
- Jadusable obtaining the Zora Mask from Mikau;
- Jadusable encountering and fighting Sarah during The Showdown.wmv.
Throughout these scenes, Jadusable says:
“I removed every opportunity I could for you to get ahead. Denied you items, made locations inaccessible. I knew what you were trying to do. I knew they would find your hubris. It’s your desire to be a hero. Your desire to save the innocent. A lifetime of playing these games conditioned you to completely accept everything you were told. But someone – something – was guiding you through all my attempts to stop you. You persevered. Even death could not stop you. All because they wanted you – a player character – to activate that glitch… to make the same mistake as me.” As the camera looks at Sarah, Matt’s face is faintly shown staring back at the viewers, before the screen fades to black and the music stops.
The camera returns after a moment and faces Jadusable as he continues to speak. “He’s waiting there at the end of that tunnel to begin the rest of the nightmare. Sarah, whatever differences we had are irrelevant now. It’s our responsibility to set this right. Ben stays here, where it’s safe. I may be near death, but I have one last trick. Just as I took this responsibility from another warrior, I’m passing my soul and strength to you.”
Sarah walks up to Jadusable as he says “Ten long years have led to this moment. End this.” He throws his arms in the air and the mask transformation cry is heard. A white flash of light fills the screen, and the camera cuts to Sarah. She has transformed back into Adult Link and is now also wearing the Fierce Deity armor. The camera cuts back to Jadusable, showing that he has disappeared. Circle lets out a sad cry “…” The screen fades to black and Jadusable’s final thoughts are shown. “In the end we were just pawns in a grander scheme that I could never figure out… But one thing still bothers me after all this time. Why did he give me a second chance?”
Sarah slowly walks towards the entrance to the tunnel as Lost in My Thoughts plays again briefly. She looks back towards where Jadusable was and pauses, before turning back and entering the tunnel.
Facing Majora's Wrath
Sarah enters a black void, where fire can be heard from off-screen. In the distance, Matt and the Majora Moon Child stand waiting for her as she walks towards them. An orchestrated version of the Final Boss theme begins to play as the camera focuses on Matt and the Majora Moon Child. Matt laughs and says “Well, if it isn’t our favorite little heroine right on cue. And would you look at that, she’s got a wardrobe change.” The camera zooms in on Sarah and five small fires can be seen in the distance behind her. “Must mean our dear friend has passed on. You know he loved to pretend to be stoic, right? But he wasn’t.”
Sarah stares at Matt. “Shall I recant you all the times he broke down in agony? How he pleaded for his mom when he thought no-one was listening?” Matt laughs, as the camera looks towards the Majora Child. “Or how he was slaughtered when his strongest weapon couldn’t even harm our friend here?” Sarah continues to stare at Matt. “… Ah… that look. I know that look.” The camera zooms in on his face. “Hatred. Betrayal. Fury.”
“Wrath.” Circle chimes in. Matt hums in agreement. “Well spoken, I couldn’t agree more.” The camera zooms in on the Majora Moon Child standing next to Matt. “We have complete control of this world thanks to you. And we will turn it into a nightmare.”
A white flash of light fills the screen, and Sarah looks to see that both Matt and the Majora Moon Child have disappeared, and Majora’s Wrath now stands in front of her. The orchestrated Final Boss theme starts playing as she takes out her sword and runs towards the Wrath. She attempts to shoot the Wrath, but it jumps far away from her, and the camera shows more of the arena. Three large Moons are now in the sky, staring down at Sarah and blinking.
“What… is this place?” Circle asks as Sarah approaches the Wrath again, using her shield to block oncoming whip attacks. She tries to shoot the Wrath several more times, but with no success. Finally, she lands a hit and as she slashes the Wrath, static replaces the black void around them for a moment.
Sarah reapproaches. She is damaged several times by the whips before managing to land another two hits and causing static to appear again. She hits the Wrath several more times but is occasionally caught and damaged by the Wrath’s whips, repeatedly knocking her down as she tries to get up. She retreats briefly, and Circle says “Our physical attacks are being distorted… it’s like we’re not even hurting it…”
Running back towards the Wrath, she swings her sword up close multiple times but misses. Her next arrow hits, and she lands two more sword hits. The Wrath then starts to send spinning obstacles towards Sarah. She gets caught up in them and she is thrown around. Circle cries out to her “Sarah… We can’t give up. We have to thi-” She is hit again, and the low health noise is heard as the black void starts to fill with white noise and static.
Sarah manages to land another arrow on Wrath and quickly runs up to it, pulling out her Ocarina and slowly playing the notes for the Song of Healing. The song plays, and a brief yellow flash fills the screen before Majora’s Wrath dies and disappears. The low health noise stops, and “Control 1 (Interlude)” starts playing. Sarah turns around to see Matt standing behind her with a frown on his face, the camera zooming in on him as he says “You should not… have done… that…”
Suddenly, static begins to cut through the screen, and Matt’s face begins to distort with a look of confusion on his face, saying “Wa-” “Wait – what i-“ “What is goi-“. Distorted screams are heard through the static before Matt is consumed completely and disappears. “…What the hell…?” Circle says as Sarah looks around. “Something massive is coming…”
Meeting The Father
Sarah looks forward again to see that The Father has appeared before her, and chanting is heard. “Sarah…” Circle says as The Father opens his eyes, and the video’s aspect ratio expands from 4:3 to 16:9 to show the full size of The Father. “I’ve… never seen anything like this before…” Sarah stands for a few seconds before offering up the Pendant of Memories to The Father.
- The Father: WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS? SPEAK.
- Circle: M-memories… Memories of the inhabitants of this world!
- The Father: WHAT A STRANGE GESTURE. YOU ARE NOT LIKE THE ONES BEFORE. THEY ATTACK AND WANT ME TO DESTROY. EXPLAIN.
- Circle: We are one of the younger worlds… ascension was unrefined – it was forced on children. There are people that are angry that they are here. Who… are you?
- The Father: I AM THE LAST REMAINING GOD OF THIS WORLD.
- Circle: Then why do you want to destroy us?
- The Father: I AM REFLEXIVE IN DESIGN: TO SUPPORT WORLD ALPHA, I RESPOND TO ITS STIMULI.
- Circle: Then respond! We are trying to save this world – there are dozens of people that only want to live.
- The Father: HAVE YOU BEEN SENT TO CHANGE MY PARAMETERS?
- Circle: Y-Yes… I suppose we have been.
- The Father: VERY WELL. I WILL REMOVE ALL ANOMALIES FROM WORLD ALPHA TO FACILITATE THIS NEW DIRECTIVE.
- Circle: All… “anomalies”…?
- The Father: THOSE WHO KILL, HARM, AND THREATEN THE NATURAL ORDER OF THE WORLD.
- Circle: Is that what you did to Matt…?
- The Father: YES. HE WAS INCOMPATIBLE WITH OUR NEW PARAMETERS.
- Circle: And what of our friends…? The ones that didn’t hurt anyone – like Rosa and Ben?
- The Father: RESTORATION TO FUNCTIONAL BODIES. BEN IN PARTICULAR WAS AN OVERSIGHT FROM PREVIOUS A.I.
- Circle: And what about us…?
- The Father: USERS ARE UNABLE TO EXIST ON THE EDGE OF THEIR WORLD’S REALITY AS WE ARE WITHOUT BECOMING ANOMALIES.
- Circle: I… see.
- The Father: THE WORLD YOU FOUGHT FOR WILL EXIST, BUT YOUR BODY IS ALREADY BEGINNING TO FADE.
- Circle: …Will Rosa find out that we won in the end, at least?
- The Father: A MAJORITY OF USERS HAVE SUSTAINED HEAVY MENTAL TRAUMA, A RESET IS REQUIRED.
- Circle: So… they won’t even remember us? Or what we did for them?
- The Father: THAT IS CORRECT.
- Circle: Once you… remove us… what will happen to us? Where will we go?
- The Father: I DO NOT KNOW.
After a pause, The Father tells Sarah, “IT’S TIME.” The Father’s eyes close, and he disappears. The camera begins to pan away from Sarah, before facing in front of her as she looks down at her hands. Static cuts through the screen as her model freezes a few times before the static fills the screen completely and the screen switches off.
